Making the Cut

Making the Cut

In an industry overrun with samples, autotune and lryical irrelevance, there is one class of artist which has fought to survive.  Song writers are a rare breed, and among the last true artist in the music industry.  All to often, we are asked about the process of creating meaningful lyrics, and the answer continues to be increasingly ellusive.  The truth is, meaningful lyrics come from real experience, and experience isnt something which can be fabricated in a control room.  When writers sit down together, it’s not simply about combining words with a cool rhythm or hook.  The “magic” is in the shared experience or common familiarity with love and life.   Despite the actual circumstance, there is knowledge in the experience of living, and only then can the words truly resonate with the listener and produce something almost spiritual.   Just like any process, songwriting is about trial and error, but once the idea is crafted, the trick is getting the song recorded or “Cut”.

This process is among the most critical and difficult in the business.  I can’t remember how many times I have heard people say “… this song is a hit, but we just can’t get it cut!”  That’s where relationships and experience play a critical role, and there is no substitute for having a strong team of people who believe in the music being created.  At KPI, we truly value the power and influence of strong industry friendships.  Whether it’s working with major labels, other publishers or strategic marketing partners, the trick is finding a way to put those “hit songs” in the ears of the people who need to hear them.  So, next time you come across that song your certain is could be the next #1 hit, remember it’s not just the lyrics or the melody, it’s finding the right people to help breath life into that song, and get it cut!

To all the song writers, pluggers, publishers and industry associates, on behalf of fans like me, THANK YOU for doing what you do!    Louis Police
